If you’re reading this, there is a 44% chance that you have set a “New Year’s Resolution” with the passing of the calendar year. There is also a strong possibility that by now, you have abandoned that resolution - or at least modified it drastically. Somehow “exercising four times a week” turns into “wearing yoga pants around the house.” If this rings familiar, you are not alone.
As a culture, we tend to put a lot of faith in the (seemingly) mystical powers of our calendar…
“It’s December, I’m going to eat as much as I want. But once January comes around, I’m changing things for good.”
“I’m starting the [insert sexiest new cleanse here] on Monday. So it doesn’t really matter what I eat this weekend.”
“My wife and I just had a major fight. We’ll just stay pissed at each other for the rest of tonight, and tomorrow we can start fresh.”
Today, my friend, I am here to proclaim to you the good news: you are not a slave to time. And a new calendar year (or a Monday or the first day of the month) will not and cannot give you anything that you do not already possess: the power to create and shape your life.
The reality is that change happens in a single moment. We create destructive habits by believing lies about ourselves and about the world. Well, it only takes a single moment to realize a truth. And a single realization can lead to a world of difference. It all starts with a revelation of the truth. And, friend, you are free to create the life you desire.
Part of the problem is that we believe old lies about ourselves. We feel bound to the past. But the past is history. It’s gone. It has no bearing on who you choose to be in this moment. The events of last week are as far away as the days of Moses in Egypt. You are not a slave to your past. In fact, you are changing every single moment. Within your body, millions of cells are passing away and birthing new life every second. On a cellular level, you are a different person than you were when you started reading this letter.
It’s a new moment, and a new you.
There is immense freedom when you realize that you do not have to wait for any measure of time in order to create change in your life. For instance, if you take part in a quarrel with your spouse, you don’t have to hold on to the grudge to make your point. The fracture in the relationship does not need to remain. You have the opportunity - at any moment - to take a few deep breaths, lay down your pride, and turn things around. In a single moment, you can choose to focus on all the beautiful aspects of the person in front of you. You can begin to perceive this person in a totally new way, and it only takes a moment of decision to set the entire change in motion.
I like the word “decide.” It comes from the Latin de- (off, or away) and -caedere (to cut). It means to cut away, or to cut off. Perhaps it is time for you to cut away your faith in the calendar - to cut off your belief in lies from your past. Perhaps it is time for you to enjoy the newness of this moment - to realize that you are a fresh soul, and you can create something wonderful from this moment on.
Every ingredient needed to create lasting change is already present within you. You don’t need to wait for any date on the calendar to start creating the life you want. And you don’t need to be a slave to past events. This moment is completely new. And so are you.
Einstein knew a little something about being different and about failure...here are a few things you may not know about him!
1. Einstein Was a Fat Baby with Large Head
2. Einstein Had Speech Difficulty as a child.
3. Einstein did not talk until age 4
4. Einstein did not read until age 9
5. Einstein Failed his University Entrance Exam
6. Einstein lost three teaching positions over a two year span.
7. Many organizations claim Einstein had a learning disability
Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany, and grew up in Munich, in a family of independent-minded, nonpracticing Jews. Little is known about his childhood. Because he was slow in learning to speak--he was not fully fluent even at the age of nine--he was at various times thought to be mentally retarded. Some experts have speculated that he was dyslexic. A headmaster once told his father that what Einstein chose as a profession wouldn't matter, because "he'll never make a success at anything." And yet at age six he began learning to play the violin and became a gifted amateur violinist, maintaining this skill throughout his life.
In 1895, at the age of 16, Einstein sat the entrance examinations for the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zürich. He failed to reach the required standard in the general part of the examination, but obtained exceptional grades in physics and mathematics. Einstein graduated from the renowned Swiss Polytechnic Institute at the age of 21, but struggled to find employment. He had a terrible reputation as a student, he skipped classes and his professors never took him seriously! After working many odd jobs to sustain himself, he finally found employment as a patent clerk. We now view Einstein's work in physics as revolutionary but when Einstein first came onto the scene, most of the scientific community thought his ideas were crazy and were not accepted as even having a leg to stand on .
